The word percent means “out of a hundred”, so 50% means 50/100, or a half.

If we wish to express a fraction as a percentage we can either find an equivalent fraction with denominator 100, or convert it into a decimal and read off the hundredths.

Worked Example

Greedy Masha bought 200 oranges. After eating 8 of the oranges she started feeling sick and didn’t want to eat any more. What percentage of the oranges did she eat?
