KS4. Probability. Recap of intersection, union and Venn diagrams

Union, Intersection & Complement

Do you know the meaning of A∩B, A∪B, A⊂B and A’ ?

Worked Example – Union & Intersection

If W = {4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24} and T = {5, 8, 20, 24, 28}.

1.) List the sets (a) W ∪ T and (b) W ∩ T

2.) Is it true that T ⊂ W?

Venn Diagrams

Can you enter data into a Venn diagram and do you know what each part of the Venn diagram represents and how to describe it with the language of unions, intersections and complements?

Worked Example – Venn Diagrams

If ξ = {a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, j, k}, A = {a, c, e, h, j} and B = {a, b, d, g, h}, then:

(1.) Illustrate these sets in a Venn diagram;

(2.) List the elements of the set A∩B;

(3.) Find n(A∩B);

(4.) List the elements of the set A∪B;

(5.) Find n(A∪B);

(6.) List the set A∩B’
