Three coplanar forces of magnitude P N, 5 N and 10 N act at a point O, as shown in the diagram. The resultant of the three forces has magnitude Q N and acts in a direction perpendicular to the force of magnitude P N.

Find the value of P and the value of Q. [4 marks]

9709/42/M/J/25q3 – Mark Scheme

A particle P of mass m kg is attached to one end of a light inextensible string of length 2.6m. The other end of the string is attached to a fixed point on a horizontal ceiling, and the string is taut. The particle is held in equilibrium by a force of magnitude 35N, acting in a vertical plane which is perpendicular to the ceiling and contains the string. The force acts in a direction perpendicular to the string (see diagram). The tension in the string is T N and the vertical distance of P from the ceiling is 2.4m.

Find, in either order, the value of m and the value of T. [4 marks]

9709/42/F/M/25q1 – Mark Scheme

Three coplanar forces of magnitudes 40 N, 30 N and X N act at a point in the directions shown in the diagram. Given that the forces are in equilibrium, find the values of \theta and X. [4 marks]
